Hello, everyone! Today I want to share a recipe for Semur, an Indonesian meat stew braised in thick brown gravy. Semur is one of the classic dishes in Indonesian cuisine, and it has a rich history and flavor. It is usually made with beef, but you can also use other types of meat, such as chicken, lamb, or tongue. The gravy is made with sweet soy sauce, shallots, garlic, ginger, candlenut, nutmeg, cloves, and other spices. It is a hearty and satisfying dish with rice or bread.

To make a Semur, you will need the following ingredients:
- 500 grams of beef stew meat (chuck)
- 3 cloves of garlic, minced
- 7 shallots, sliced
- 3 stalks of green onion, chopped
- 3 tablespoons of soy sauce
- 3 tablespoons of teriyaki sauce
- 250 ml of coconut milk
- 3 bay leaves
- 3 teaspoons of white pepper
- 3 teaspoons of turmeric powder
- some salt to taste, as for my suggestion: 1½ teaspoons
The steps are:
- Cut the beef into 1 cm thick pieces.
- Cut the garlic, shallots, and green onion into small pieces.
- Heat a skillet and some cooking oil over medium-high heat.
- Add the bay leaves and the garlic, shallots, and green onion pieces. Stir-fry until fragrant and soft.
- Add the soy sauce and teriyaki sauce. Stir well to coat the ingredients.
- Add the coconut milk and bring it to a boil. Lower the heat and simmer until slightly thickened.
- Add the beef and spread it evenly on the skillet.
- Cover the skillet and cook for 10 minutes over low heat.
- Uncover the skillet and cook uncovered until the liquid is reduced and only oil remains.
- Season with white pepper, turmeric powder, and salt to taste.
And that’s it! Your Semur is ready to serve. Enjoy it with some steamed rice or bread, and some fresh vegetables or salad on the side. You can also garnish it with some fried shallots or cilantro for extra flavor and crunch.
I hope you liked this recipe and will try it at home. Semur is a delicious and easy dish that you can make for your family or friends anytime. Let me know what you think in the comments below. Thank you for reading!
I’m writing this entry using Bing Discover’s compose feature with ChatGPT and Bing Image Creator for the picture. I wanted to see how my rough blog post draft in Indonesian would turn into a full English post with a casual tone. The results are amazing, even though I had to adjust a bit on some parts and fix a few grammar mistakes using Grammarly. I’m impressed by how Bing can help me create engaging content in different languages and styles.
